Matter Version Compatibility

Matter 1.0 through 1.4 added new device types incrementally. Each platform (Home Assistant, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa) supports a different subset. This page maps every device type to the version that introduced it and shows which platforms support it.

Why this matters: A device that pairs successfully may still appear as a generic switch or not work correctly if the target platform does not support the device's Matter version. This is the most common cause of "paired but not working" issues in 2025–2026.

FAQ

Why does a Matter device work in Home Assistant but not in Apple Home?

Home Assistant updates its Matter SDK quickly and often supports newer device types (Matter 1.2, 1.3, 1.4) before other platforms. Apple Home adds new Matter device types with iOS updates — if your iPhone or HomePod is on an older OS, device types introduced in Matter 1.2+ may not appear. Update to the latest iOS and HomePod firmware to get Matter 1.3/1.4 support.

My robot vacuum pairs successfully but shows as a generic switch in Apple Home. Why?

Robot vacuums are a Matter 1.2 device type. Apple Home added support for Matter 1.2 device types in iOS 17.2. If your Apple Home hub (HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K) or iPhone is running older software, the vacuum appears as a generic switch or not at all. Update to iOS 17.2 or later to see the correct vacuum tile.

Does my EV charger work with Matter in Google Home?

No, as of 2026. EV chargers are a Matter 1.3 device type and Google Home has not yet added support for Matter 1.3 EV charger functionality. Home Assistant is currently the only mainstream smart home platform with full Matter 1.3 EV charger support.

What Matter version does Home Assistant support?

Home Assistant supports Matter 1.4 as of HAOS 2025.1. It is consistently the fastest platform to adopt new Matter SDK versions and add new device types.

Why does Alexa not support newer Matter device types?

Amazon has been slower to update its Matter stack than other platforms. Alexa currently supports Matter 1.0 and most of 1.1, with partial 1.2 support for some device types. Matter 1.3 and 1.4 device types (EV chargers, water heaters, water leak detectors) are not yet supported. For these device types, Home Assistant is the recommended platform.
